Northern Iowa Prairie Lakes Chapter of the National Audubon Society Mission Statement: To create “A Culture of Conservation” within the chapter area by promoting enjoyment, protection and restoration of northern Iowa’s ecosystems, focusing upon birds, other wildlife and their habitats. Goals and Strategies: Protect habitat for birds and other wildlife: Support efforts of public agencies and non-governmental organizations to acquire, preserve and restore critical habitats. Acquire and mange chapter sanctuaries specifically directed toward bird conservation and observation. Prepare members to become citizen “watchdogs” for better protection of wildlife habitat from illegal activities. - Educate the public about wildlife and habitat needs:
Sponsor/lead field trips for identification of bird, other wildlife and flora. Produce, for public distribution, updated checklists of regional bird life. Sponsor “Audubon Adventures” and other educational activities for area schools. Support efforts to create and maintain Audubon Centers and other nature centers within the chapter area. Promote sound public environmental policy: Urge the Iowa General Assembly and local county Boards of Supervisors to pursue policies of habitat protection and cleaner air and water. Issue policy statements supporting regulations or initiatives regarding ecological values. Increase chapter membership and participation: Publish bimonthly newsletter for chapter members. Offer incentives to join and maintain chapter membership. Increase chapter image/recognition within area communities. Sponsor more “family-friendly” chapter meetings, field trips and special activities
